Inter vs Udinese
Serie A 2026/27, Matchday 4
September 14, 2026. 20:45.
Giuseppe Meazza, Milan

Inter's last two matches have transformed them from a traditionally controlled favorite into a team involved in almost constant end-to-end football. Cristian Chivu's side came back from 2-0 down to beat Napoli 3-2, then created plenty at the Bernabeu but made too many defensive mistakes in a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid. Udinese have hardly been playing quiet matches either. After a 3-2 win over Monza and a 2-1 Coppa Italia victory against Venezia, they led Lazio before losing momentum in the second half and falling 2-1. At San Siro, two teams meet that can trouble opponents in possession but still look vulnerable enough without the ball to make a three-goal line attractive.

Inter - form and statistics

Chivu has retained Inter's familiar 3-5-2 foundation but made the team more aggressive in its overall behavior. The wing-backs push extremely high, one central midfielder regularly attacks the penalty area from deep and the Nerazzurri try to regain possession on the opposition half immediately after losing it. In Serie A, that approach has produced a perfect start with three wins from three and eight goals scored.

After beating Monza 4-1 and Cagliari 1-0, Inter produced a remarkable comeback against Napoli. Lautaro Martinez reduced a 2-0 deficit shortly after the visitors' second goal, Marcus Thuram equalized in the 82nd minute and Lautaro completed the turnaround in stoppage time. Yet the same match exposed the risk in Chivu's approach. Inter were willing to sacrifice defensive balance in order to attack, and Napoli still came close to scoring a third even after the score reached 2-2. That vulnerability appeared again in Madrid. Inter enjoyed long spells of possession, but defensive mistakes gave Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde the openings Real needed for a 2-1 win.

Josep Martinez currently starts in goal, with Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji and Alessandro Bastoni forming the core of the back three. Chivu can also call upon John Stones, Benjamin Pavard and young Aleksandar Stankovic, so rotation after the Champions League fixture is a realistic possibility. Against Napoli, Nicolo Barella, Piotr Zielinski and Petar Sucic operated centrally, while Andy Diouf and Federico Dimarco started out wide.

Dimarco remains one of Inter's primary sources of creativity through crosses, shots and set pieces, while Barella accelerates attacks through the middle. Lautaro is the main reference point in attack and arrives after his brace against Napoli. Pio Esposito provides physical presence and movement, while Thuram can be particularly dangerous against tired defenders after coming from the bench. With Ange-Yoan Bonny and additional attacking options available, Inter have enough depth to maintain intensity deep into the second half.

Udinese - team form and statistics

Kosta Runjaic's Udinese are no longer a side defined only by deep defending and set pieces. Their basic 3-4-2-1 structure allows them to move the ball forward quickly through the wing-backs, while the two players behind the central striker search for pockets between the opposition lines. Runjaic has acknowledged that the squad has not yet reached its ideal physical condition, but he has shown little desire to constantly change the team's core mechanisms.

The plan worked for more than an hour against Lazio. Udinese went ahead through Jesper Karlstrom after an assist from Keinan Davis and were willing to attack quickly whenever transition opportunities appeared. The problem came after the 70th minute. The team noticeably lost physical intensity, struggled to retain possession and began giving Lazio too many counterattacking opportunities. Davide Frattesi equalized in the 75th minute before Gudmundsson scored the winner in the 88th. Runjaic admitted afterwards that Udinese should have slowed the game down once they were ahead. That drop-off is particularly concerning before facing an Inter side capable of introducing fresh attacking quality late on.

Maduka Okoye remains first choice in goal, with James Abankwah, Oumar Solet and Enzo Ebosse starting ahead of him in the previous round. There are new injury concerns in that area. Solet felt muscular discomfort during the first half and had to be replaced, while Jakub Piotrowski also entered the game below full fitness and soon left the pitch. Christian Kabasele and Lennon Miller were used as replacements.

Mergim Vojvoda and Hassane Kamara are important on the flanks, while Karlstrom helps connect defense with attack through the middle. Further forward, Runjaic can use Davis, Vakoun Bayo, Jurgen Ekkelenkamp and Unai Gomez. Davis assisted the goal against Lazio, while Bayo scored twice against Venezia in the Coppa Italia only a few days earlier. The main problem is squad depth. Runjaic has openly admitted that Udinese cannot match the strongest teams in that department, and the fitness concerns around Solet and Piotrowski reduce his options even further.

This matchup has produced several very different patterns. The most recent meeting ended with a single Inter goal, but three of the four competitive games before that produced at least three goals. It is also notable that Udinese won 2-1 at San Siro last season, so the visitors have no obvious psychological reason to treat this trip as a match in which attacking ambition must disappear completely.

The current version of Inter also looks more aggressive than the side involved in that narrow January win. Chivu's team have scored eight goals in three league rounds and showed against Napoli that they are prepared to deliberately increase risk when chasing a result. Udinese, meanwhile, have scored in every Serie A match so far, while their last three competitive fixtures finished 3-2, 2-1 and 1-2.

Match Prediction

Inter's attacking variety is the strongest argument for Over 2.5 Goals at 1.60. Lautaro is in good form, Thuram can dramatically increase the tempo after halftime, Dimarco constantly creates danger from the left and both Barella and Sucic attack the penalty area from deeper positions.

After the 3-2 comeback against Napoli and an eventful Champions League game at the Bernabeu, Inter are clearly not operating in a sequence of cautious 1-0 performances. Chivu's team are prepared to send numbers forward, and that naturally increases both their scoring potential and the amount of space they leave behind.

The three goals do not necessarily need to come entirely from the hosts. Udinese have scored in every Serie A fixture so far, and Davis, Bayo and Ekkelenkamp have enough quality to exploit the spaces created by Dimarco and Inter's opposite wing-back pushing high.

At the same time, Udinese's physical decline after the 70th minute against Lazio is particularly significant here. That is exactly the phase in which Chivu can introduce fresh forwards and increase the pressure. Scores such as 2-1, 3-0 or 3-1 all fit the current profile of these teams.

The Final Half-Hour Could Be the Most Dangerous Phase

- One of the strongest clues for this bet came not from a result but from Runjaic himself. After the Lazio defeat, the Udinese coach acknowledged that his team physically dropped after roughly 70 minutes, stopped protecting possession effectively and began allowing too many transitions. Against Inter, that is close to the worst possible weakness.

- Chivu has the depth to make the final half-hour dramatically different from the opening stages. Thuram came on against Napoli and scored, while Hakan Calhanoglu increased the quality in midfield and Carlos Augusto refreshed the left side. Even if Udinese successfully protect their penalty area for the first 50 or 60 minutes, the character of the match can change quickly once Inter begin using their bench.

- There is also a route in the opposite direction. Inter's high wing-backs give Udinese opportunities to attack through quick passes into Davis or forward runs from Kamara and Vojvoda. A goal for the visitors may therefore increase rather than reduce the tempo. Chivu's team already demonstrated against Napoli that when the score turns against them, their response is to commit even more players forward.

- That makes this a matchup in which the closing stages could be more open than the beginning. If Udinese tire again and Inter keep increasing attacking pressure, the third goal should have several different ways to arrive.

Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals at 1.60.
