Real Sociedad vs Atletico Madrid
La Liga 2026/27. Matchday 5
September 13, 2026. 21:00
Anoeta, San Sebastian

San Sebastian hosts a meeting between two teams that have changed character far too often within the same match at the start of the season. Real Sociedad have just survived a chaotic 3-2 win over Elche, surrendering a 2-0 lead while playing with ten men before finding a late winner. Atletico Madrid went through a similarly tense evening at Anfield a few days later, scoring first but eventually losing 2-1 under sustained Liverpool pressure.

Both teams enter the weekend on seven points, but the nature of their recent games is more interesting than the table. Sociedad have already conceded eight league goals, while Atletico have allowed six. With Mikel Oyarzabal, Takefusa Kubo and Luka Sucic on one side and Julian Alvarez, Ademola Lookman and Alex Baena on the other, there is enough attacking quality for this matchup to develop into another open contest.

Real Sociedad

Pellegrino Matarazzo's project is gradually becoming more vertical and aggressive. The American coach has not abandoned Sociedad's traditional comfort in possession, but he wants quicker progression after regaining the ball and more players arriving inside the penalty area. Against Elche, Sociedad started in a 4-4-2, with Oyarzabal operating close to the central striker while Goncalo Guedes and Carlos Soler helped progress possession from deeper areas.

The plan initially worked extremely well. Sociedad were 2-0 up by the 31st minute through Job Ochieng and Yangel Herrera, but Jon Martin's red card in the 64th minute completely changed the structure. Elche scored twice within seven minutes and only a 90th-minute strike from Sucic rescued a 3-2 victory. Ochieng was one of the major influences on the game, scoring and contributing heavily to two other dangerous attacks while working between the lines. That result followed a 0-0 draw with Celta, a 2-1 win over Espanyol and a damaging 4-1 defeat at the Bernabeu. Sociedad can create chances, but they are still too capable of turning control into chaos.

Alex Remiro and Unai Marrero give Matarazzo options in goal, with Marrero starting against Elche and making several important late saves. Igor Zubeldia, Mamadou Sarr, Jon Aramburu, Aihen Munoz, Hector Fort and Jon Pacheco are available in defense, while Martin is suspended after his straight red card. Alvaro Odriozola continues his recovery from a serious knee injury, while Pablo Marin has returned to team training. In midfield and attack, Sucic, Herrera, Soler, Benat Turrientes, Jon Gorrotxategi, Kubo, Guedes, Ander Barrenetxea, Oyarzabal and Orri Oskarsson provide plenty of options. The key danger against Atletico is obvious: if both full-backs push high together, Marcos Llorente and Lookman will have space to attack behind them.

Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone's Atletico have started the season with a much freer attacking approach than the club's traditional image might suggest. The team can still drop into a compact 4-4-2, but in possession Llorente moves almost like a right winger, Baena searches for pockets between the lines and Lee Kang-in and Alvarez repeatedly look for space behind opposing midfielders.

That approach produced Atletico's goal at Anfield. Alvarez split Liverpool's defense with a pass, Llorente attacked the open channel and finished like a forward to make it 1-0. The difficulty came later. Liverpool increased the intensity of their press, pushed Atletico closer to Jan Oblak's goal and eventually turned the match around through Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. Oblak made several important saves, while Cristian Romero brought aggression to the back line on his first start but visibly tired late on. Before that defeat, Atletico had lost 3-0 to Athletic Club, beaten Sevilla 3-1 and drawn 2-2 with Villarreal. Simeone has attacking options, but defensive stability is still missing.

Oblak remains the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, with David Hancko, Romero, Robin Le Normand, Marc Pubill and Alejandro Grimaldo forming part of a reshaped defensive unit. Koke, Pablo Barrios, Morten Hjulmand, Johnny Cardoso and Obed Vargas provide midfield depth. Further forward, Alvarez, Lookman, Jonathan David and Lee Kang-in offer very different movement patterns, while Baena and Giuliano Simeone allow the shape to change during matches. Alexander Sorloth remains the main confirmed absence as he recovers from a muscular problem. Jonathan David, however, returned from a neck spasm and came off the bench at Anfield. Atletico therefore have enough attacking depth, but the larger question remains whether they can protect the spaces that appear after losing possession.

Last season already produced two high-scoring meetings between these clubs. Atletico won the March league game 3-2, while the Copa del Rey tie a month later ended 2-2 before Sociedad advanced on penalties. Four or five goals in this matchup therefore no longer look particularly unusual.

The current numbers also support a more open interpretation. Sociedad have scored six and conceded eight across their opening five league matches, while Atletico have a 7-6 balance after four. More importantly, both sides have already suffered games in which their defensive structure collapsed over a short period. Sociedad conceded four at Real Madrid, while Atletico allowed three against Athletic Club.

Prediction

Over 2.5 Goals at 1.70 is attractive primarily because neither defense looks stable enough right now. Sociedad have just come through a 3-2 game, while Atletico conceded five goals across their recent matches against Athletic Club and Liverpool.

There is also plenty of attacking quality on both sides. Oyarzabal, Kubo and Sucic give Sociedad different ways to create chances, while Atletico can respond through Alvarez, Baena, Lookman and Llorente. Neither team needs a complete defensive collapse for this bet to land.

The likely match scenario also helps. Sociedad are unlikely to spend an entire home game protecting a 0-0 at Anoeta, while Simeone's side need a positive response after consecutive defeats. If either team scores early, the other possesses enough pace and technical quality to turn the game into an exchange of attacks rather than a slow positional contest.

Llorente Can Force Sociedad Into an Uncomfortable Choice

- One of the most interesting tactical battles may develop away from the center of the pitch. Llorente repeatedly attacked space from Atletico's right side at Anfield, and that is exactly where the opening goal originated. Alvarez played through Liverpool's defensive line and Llorente arrived beyond it with the timing of a striker.

- That creates a problem for Matarazzo because Sociedad like their full-backs to advance aggressively. If the left-back repeatedly vacates his position to support attacks, Llorente will have ideal conditions for vertical runs into the space behind him. If Sociedad instead keep that player deeper, Baena and Alvarez should receive more freedom in central areas.

- Either solution can help the over. Sociedad can stick with their adventurous approach and leave transition opportunities for Atletico, or become more cautious and allow the visitors longer spells of possession near the penalty area. Given how inconsistently both teams have defended during recent matches, three goals look reachable without the game needing to become a complete shootout.
