Manchester United vs Manchester City Match Prediction
Manchester United vs Manchester City. Premier League 2026/27, Matchday 4. September 13, 2026 | Old Trafford, Manchester | 17:30.
The Manchester derby arrives with the two neighbors experiencing very different starts to the season. United celebrated their Champions League return with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Sabah, but their Premier League campaign has already included defeat to Hull and a frustrating draw at Everton. City have been flawless so far. Three league victories were followed by an authoritative 2-0 win in Porto, where Enzo Maresca's side almost completely removed the Portuguese champions as an attacking threat.
Old Trafford should provide United with another emotional lift after their European success, and derby history makes it dangerous to judge this fixture purely through current form. Even so, City's ability to maintain their structure for longer periods and control different phases of a match gives the visitors the more convincing foundation.
Manchester United
Michael Carrick's United are becoming increasingly vertical and aggressive, particularly at Old Trafford. Their basic 4-2-3-1 can become a 3-2-5 in possession, with the wide players moving high, Bruno Fernandes searching for pockets between the lines and the team looking to move forward quickly after regaining possession rather than constructing every attack through long passing sequences. Against Sabah, that approach worked almost perfectly. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring before Bruno, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez completed a 4-0 victory in which United produced 22 attempts and ten shots on target.
The level of resistance will be completely different in the derby. United have already conceded six goals in three Premier League rounds, and the 2-2 draw with Everton again exposed their problems when attacks become prolonged and the defensive structure has to reorganize after substitutions or turnovers. Senne Lammens remains first choice in goal, with Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, Martinez, Harry Maguire, Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw among Carrick's defensive options. Shaw missed the Sabah match because of fitness concerns but is expected to return to the squad. Matthijs de Ligt, Amad Diallo, Manuel Ugarte and Carlos Baleba remain unavailable.
Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans produced an assured midfield performance in Europe, while Mason Mount's return gives Carrick another rotation option. The most interesting decision concerns Sesko. The Slovenian gives United height, penalty-area presence and a natural target for crosses, allowing Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno to move around him. Carrick specifically highlighted the different dimension Sesko provides after his Champions League goal. That variety gives United ways to threaten City, but the hosts will need considerably greater defensive discipline than they have shown in the league so far.

Manchester City
While United are still searching for balance, Maresca's City have started the season with remarkably little disruption. The Italian has maintained the club's preference for controlling possession but added a more direct element. City are willing to accelerate immediately after turnovers and look for Erling Haaland earlier rather than always progressing through extended positional sequences. The results have been close to perfect: 2-1 against Bournemouth, 4-1 at Crystal Palace, 1-0 against Coventry and then 2-0 in Porto.
The performance in Portugal was particularly impressive. City had 64% possession, registered ten shots on target while allowing Porto none, and Haaland scored both goals. More importantly, Maresca's team have already demonstrated several ways of winning. They can overwhelm opponents in open games, work through narrow contests and control difficult European away fixtures. Gianluigi Donnarumma provides elite security in goal, while Matheus Nunes, Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol formed the defensive line in Porto. Dias and Guehi were particularly effective in preventing Porto from creating meaningful danger around the penalty area.
Enzo Fernandez and young Ayyoub Bouaddi offer an intriguing midfield combination following Rodri's departure, with Fernandez making an immediate impact after his move. Further forward, Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo, Elliot Anderson and Iliman Ndiaye give Maresca multiple ways to support Haaland. The Norwegian has scored three times in the opening three Premier League rounds and added another two goals in Porto. Jeremy Doku remains a major doubt while recovering from a calf injury, and Nico O'Riley missed the Porto trip with a back problem, although a return for the derby remains possible.

The most recent derby is an important warning against drawing an overly simple conclusion from current form. United beat City 2-0 at Old Trafford in January through goals from Mbeumo and Dorgu, ending their neighbors' 13-match unbeaten run. Carrick is capable of becoming more pragmatic for major fixtures, dropping his team deeper and using the speed of his forwards on the break. City should not expect to dominate possession without resistance.
This time, however, the visitors arrive in very different condition. Three Premier League victories and a controlled 2-0 win in Porto suggest Maresca's team are becoming increasingly effective at shutting down opposition transitions. That matters because quick breaks are one of United's most dangerous weapons against stronger opponents. If City can restrict the space available to Mbeumo and Cunha, Carrick's side will be forced to spend more time trying to break down an organized defense.
Prediction
Manchester City 0 Asian Handicap at 1.61 offers more protection than backing an outright away victory, which feels appropriate for a derby of this nature. United are capable of producing an excellent home performance, particularly after the confidence boost of their 4-0 Champions League win, but they have not yet shown City's consistency. Carrick's side have already dropped five points in three league rounds, while Maresca's team remain perfect.
The visitors' main advantage should be their control through midfield and immediately after losing possession. Fernandez, Bouaddi and Anderson give City the ability not only to dominate the ball but also to recover it quickly, while Haaland can punish even a single gap between United's center-backs and full-backs.
United should still create opportunities through their pace in wide areas, and the derby factor makes a draw a realistic possibility. That is exactly why the 0 handicap is attractive. Over 90 minutes, City's structure looks more dependable, while a level finish simply returns the stake.
Haaland Forces United Into Two Uncomfortable Choices
Haaland's threat is not limited to his own finishing. His positioning constantly occupies one or sometimes two central defenders, opening pockets around the edge of the penalty area for Foden, Cherki or Fernandez. Porto experienced the full effect of that structure. Haaland scored twice, but City's ten shots on target illustrated how many different routes Maresca's attack can create once the opposition becomes preoccupied with the striker.
Carrick therefore faces a difficult decision. If United press high, Dias and Guehi can look for an early pass through the first line and suddenly leave Haaland running at the center-backs. If the hosts retreat instead, City can establish prolonged possession around the penalty area and stretch the block through Semenyo, Nunes and Gvardiol. Neither solution is particularly comfortable for a United defense that has already conceded six league goals.
The schedule provides City with one more small advantage. They played in Porto on Tuesday, while United hosted Sabah on Thursday. Maresca's side were also able to manage their European match with considerable control, whereas Carrick still used a significant portion of his strongest available lineup despite establishing a comfortable lead. Two additional recovery days may not decide the derby on their own, but they could become noticeable during the final 20 minutes of an intense contest.
Betting Pick: Manchester City 0 Asian Handicap at 1.61.
