Gustavo Varela Has Scored Seven in Eight, While Napoli Arrive After Conceding Six Goals Across Two Chaotic Matches

Seven goals in eight Serie A rounds have turned Gustavo Varela into one of the breakout players of the Italian season. The Portuguese forward keeps giving Monza a chance in difficult games, even though Ivan Juric's side continue to drop points because of defensive problems. Their latest 3-2 defeat at Torino was another example, with Monza creating enough attacking situations to remain competitive but again paying for mistakes without the ball.

Napoli are dealing with similar instability. Massimiliano Allegri's team followed a 4-3 Champions League victory over Bodo/Glimt with a 3-3 draw against Roma, surrendering a two-goal advantage and conceding three times for the second consecutive match. A demanding schedule and injuries in defence complicate the trip to Brianteo, where Monza recently demolished Cagliari 4-0. Napoli have greater individual quality, but the hosts have enough attacking form to make this a far more difficult contest than the standings suggest.

Monza

Monza's return to Serie A has been challenging, although Juric's team have shown enough attacking quality to suggest they can remain competitive. After eight rounds, the Biancorossi sit 15th with seven points and a 15-18 goal difference, recording two wins, one draw and five defeats. Their home form has been considerably stronger than their away results. Monza have already beaten Sassuolo 2-1 and Cagliari 4-0 at Brianteo, while they are still searching for their first league win on the road. The Cagliari performance on October 19 was arguably their best of the season, with Eddy Quadio opening the scoring, Varela doubling the advantage shortly after half-time, Jay Robinson adding a third and Varela completing his brace late on. Monza then lost 3-2 at Torino, but again showed attacking resistance. Varela equalised early in the second half, and Cyril Ngonge helped create a late second goal after Torino had moved two ahead. Even in defeat, Juric's team continued to generate chances until the closing stages.

Juric remains committed to an intense 3-4-2-1 built around man-oriented pressing, aggressive midfield duels and fast vertical transitions. Monza want to move the ball forward quickly rather than spend long periods circulating possession, with the two attacking midfielders constantly looking for spaces around the striker. The wing-backs are also encouraged to advance and create width, while the defensive line pushes up to keep the team compact after turnovers. That approach worked extremely well against Cagliari because Monza repeatedly recovered possession high and attacked before the opposition could reset. The downside is the amount of space left when the first press is beaten. Torino exploited those gaps several times, particularly with shots from the edge of the box and quick attacks into the half-spaces. Eighteen goals conceded in eight rounds is one of the worst defensive records in the league, so Juric may need a slightly more controlled approach against a Napoli midfield containing Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay.

Varela is unquestionably the main attacking threat after scoring seven goals in eight league appearances. His movement between centre-backs, sharp positioning inside the penalty area and ability to punish small defensive mistakes have made him extremely difficult to contain. He has scored in three consecutive matches, including twice against Cagliari and once at Torino. Dani Mota and Robinson provide additional pace and movement around him, while Patrick Cutrone offers another central option and Ngonge can change the tempo from wide areas. Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Michael Folorunsho and Mangu Foe Ondoa carry much of the midfield responsibility, with Akinsanmiro progressing the ball, Folorunsho adding physical strength and long-range shooting, and Foe Ondoa protecting the defensive structure. Andrea Colpani gives Juric another creative option. Saba Goglichidze and Lorenzo Lucchesi remain important at the back, with Quadio regularly supporting attacks from deeper positions and Noel Tornqvist continuing in goal. Matteo Pessina is still recovering from a knee injury, Jan Ziolkowski has a foot problem, Ivan Maic has missed recent matches with a muscular issue, and the availability of Patrick Ciurria and Idrissa Toure remains uncertain.

Napoli

Napoli have been one of Serie A's most unpredictable teams, alternating impressive attacking performances with frustrating dropped points. Allegri's side have 11 points from eight rounds and sit ninth with a 13-10 goal difference after three wins, two draws and three defeats. Their away form has been particularly inconsistent. Napoli have won only once in four league trips, beating Genoa 2-0 before dropping points against Inter, Fiorentina and Venezia. The 1-0 defeat in Venice was especially disappointing because Napoli created several opportunities but even failed to convert a penalty. The Champions League has brought similar volatility. After losing 3-1 to Villarreal, Napoli beat Bodo/Glimt 4-3 at home behind a McTominay brace, yet still conceded three times. Their latest Serie A match against Roma ended 3-3 after goals from Frank Anguissa and McTominay gave Napoli a 2-0 lead. McTominay later scored again to make it 3-2, but Leonardo Balerdi equalised shortly afterwards. Six goals conceded across two official matches underline how quickly Napoli's defensive control has deteriorated.

Allegri is trying to combine his usual pragmatic principles with a more proactive 4-3-3 that gives Napoli's midfielders greater freedom to attack. In possession, the team build patiently through De Bruyne and use McTominay's movement between the lines to create an extra runner around the box. The full-backs provide width, while the wingers move into more central areas to open passing lanes and support the striker. Allegri can still shift into a more conservative shape when the game demands it, adding numbers to midfield and reducing transition risk. The problem is that the current structure has not consistently protected the defence. Against Roma, Napoli created enough chances to score more than three but repeatedly lost control after gaining an advantage. Defensive positioning inside the box was particularly poor, and Allegri admitted afterwards that the team are allowing opponents back into games too easily. The schedule adds another complication, with Napoli playing three competitive matches in eight days before another difficult trip to Juventus.

Rasmus Hojlund remains the main forward thanks to his pace, physical strength and willingness to run behind the defensive line. Lorenzo Lucca offers a more aerial alternative, while Matteo Politano and Noa Lang provide creativity and one-on-one threat from wide positions. The midfield is the strongest area of the squad. De Bruyne directs attacks and finds passes between the lines, McTominay has become a major scoring threat after consecutive two-goal performances, and Anguissa adds power and ball-winning ability. Stanislav Lobotka can provide greater positional control against aggressive pressure. Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Amir Rrahmani remain important in defence, with Rafa Marin, Sam Beukema and Mathias Olivera competing for the other positions. Alex Meret started against Roma, although Vanja Milinkovic-Savic remains another option in goal. Alessandro Buongiorno is recovering from meniscus surgery, David Neres and Alisson Santos are sidelined with hamstring problems, and Costantino Favasuli is also unavailable. Benoit Badiashile suffered a muscular injury against Roma, while Di Lorenzo has been dealing with the effects of a knee knock. Rrahmani, however, is expected to be available.

2-0

Napoli have won three of the last five meetings, while Monza have taken one victory and another match finished level. The Partenopei have also won the last three in the series, keeping clean sheets in two of them. Their most recent visit to Brianteo ended in a narrow 1-0 victory in April 2025.

Monza have still caused Napoli problems at this stadium before. They won 2-0 in May 2023 and scored twice in a 4-2 defeat the following season. With Varela in outstanding form and Napoli currently struggling to defend transitions, the hosts have more attacking reasons for optimism than the recent head-to-head record alone would suggest.

Varela Can Turn Napoli's Defensive Problems Into a Serious Test

- The central individual matchup revolves around Varela and Napoli's reshuffled defence. Seven goals in eight matches is not simply the product of high shot volume. The Portuguese striker has repeatedly punished positional mistakes, whether by attacking space between centre-backs or reacting first to loose balls around the box.

- That profile is particularly relevant against a Napoli defence that may once again be forced into changes. Buongiorno remains unavailable, Badiashile picked up another muscular problem and Di Lorenzo has not been completely free of physical concerns. Even if Rrahmani returns, the understanding between the defenders may not be ideal.

- Mota and Robinson can help create the spaces Varela needs. Both are comfortable moving away from central areas and attacking at speed, which could force Napoli's back line to defend facing its own goal. Monza's wing-backs can also add numbers quickly if the hosts escape Napoli's first pressure.

- The obvious risk for Juric is being too aggressive. De Bruyne and McTominay are exactly the type of midfielders capable of punishing a broken man-to-man press. If Monza leave large spaces in the centre, Hojlund could receive several opportunities to run directly at an exposed defensive line.

Napoli's Schedule and Away Form Reduce the Margin for Error

➥ Napoli clearly possess the stronger squad, but their current schedule makes a comfortable away victory less straightforward. The 4-3 Champions League game against Bodo/Glimt and the 3-3 draw with Roma both required significant physical and emotional effort, and Allegri must manage the squad with another difficult fixture against Juventus approaching.

➥ Their league away record also deserves attention. Napoli have won only one of four Serie A games on the road and have already dropped points against Inter, Fiorentina and Venezia. For a team expected to compete near the top, that is a meaningful weakness.

➥ Monza's own defensive numbers are poor, but the contrast between their home and away performances offers some encouragement. Six goals scored across recent home victories over Sassuolo and Cagliari show that Brianteo has provided Juric's team with a much stronger platform.

➥ Napoli may still win because their midfield and attacking quality are superior, but the +1 handicap gives Monza protection against exactly that scenario. A one-goal away victory results in a push, while a draw or Monza win lands the bet.

Prediction

Monza remain difficult to trust defensively after conceding 18 goals in eight rounds, but their attacking form gives them a realistic chance to stay competitive. Varela has scored seven times, the team have won their last two league games at Brianteo and Juric's aggressive transition football can target a Napoli defence that has just conceded six goals across two matches. With several defenders unavailable or carrying physical concerns, the visitors may again struggle to keep their structure intact for the full 90 minutes.

Napoli still have the superior squad and enough quality through De Bruyne, McTominay and Hojlund to punish Monza's own defensive weaknesses, so the hosts carry substantial risk if the game becomes stretched. However, Allegri's side have won only one of four league away matches and now face another fixture in a demanding sequence. The +1 line offers useful protection because a narrow Napoli victory returns the stake, while Monza's home form and Varela's finishing provide a plausible path to a draw or better.

Match Prediction: Monza +1 Asian Handicap at 1.62.
