Venezia vs Inter. Serie A 2026/27, Matchday 9. October 28, 2026 | Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo, Venice | 19:30.

Davide Nicola Has Already Stopped Napoli, and Now Venezia Will Try to Frustrate the Serie A Leaders Without Giving Inter Space to Attack

Inter remain top of Serie A and enter the next round after three consecutive victories, although Cristian Chivu's side have had to work hard for their latest results. They scored only once against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League and needed two stoppage-time goals to beat Fiorentina 2-1 in their most recent league appearance. Even with 22 points from eight matches, the Nerazzurri have shown that compact opponents can slow their attacking rhythm.

Venezia are still bottom of the table, but the arrival of Davide Nicola has already changed the way the team compete. The newly promoted side shocked Napoli 1-0 before narrowly losing 1-0 at Genoa, producing a much more disciplined defensive structure in both matches. With Lautaro Martinez unavailable and Inter facing another demanding week, the gap in individual quality remains enormous, but this does not necessarily look like a game that must develop into a high-scoring rout.

Venezia - team form and statistics

Venezia's return to Serie A has been extremely difficult. After eight rounds, they sit last with only three points and a 6-17 goal difference, having lost each of their opening six league matches. Defensive organisation was the biggest problem during that run, with defeats against Fiorentina, Atalanta and Frosinone exposing how easily opponents could move through the middle and attack the space around the penalty area. The coaching change brought an immediate response. In Nicola's first game on October 17, Venezia stunned Napoli 1-0 at home through an Akor Adams goal early in the second half, while Filip Stankovic saved a Kevin De Bruyne penalty and made several important late stops. The follow-up ended in a 1-0 defeat at Genoa, but Venezia again looked far more controlled and created enough opportunities to believe they could have taken something from the match. Nicola admitted afterwards that the team are more organised but still lack efficiency in front of goal.

Nicola has introduced a compact 3-5-2 that becomes a 5-3-2 when Venezia defend. The priority is to close central spaces, protect the area in front of the penalty box and force opponents into wider, slower attacks. When possession is recovered, Venezia try to move forward quickly through Adams' physical presence and John Yeboah's pace. The wing-backs are responsible for providing width, but their first task will be defensive against an Inter side that relies heavily on Federico Dimarco and Carlos Augusto. The new structure worked well against Napoli and again limited Genoa to relatively few clear opportunities, yet problems remain when Venezia are pressed aggressively in midfield. Short buildup can become difficult, while positional attacks often lack the speed and final pass required to sustain pressure. Against Inter, Nicola is unlikely to take unnecessary risks and should once again prioritise compact distances and a low-event game.

Adams and Yeboah remain the main attacking options. Adams gives Venezia a target for direct balls, protects possession well with his body and scored the winner against Napoli, while Yeboah offers more mobility and can threaten through dribbling and runs between the lines. Albion Rrahmani and Lion Lauberbach provide additional options from the bench. Kike Perez, Toma Basic and Simon Sohm are central to the midfield, with Perez helping progression, Basic protecting the structure and Sohm contributing to pressing and late runs. Antoine Hainaut and Ridgeciano Haps face a demanding workload on the flanks, while Juan Jesus, Matias Moreno and Redouane Halhal have become the preferred defensive trio. Stankovic remains the first-choice goalkeeper. Bartol Franjic is still recovering from a shoulder injury, Marin Sverko has a thigh problem, Andrea Adorante is not yet fully fit after a back issue, and Thierry Correia continues his recovery from a muscular injury. Gianluca Busio and Armel Bella-Kotchap have returned to the squad, although their readiness for heavy minutes remains uncertain.

Inter team and player statistics

Inter continue to set the pace in Serie A with 22 points from eight rounds and a 23-10 goal difference. Chivu's team have seven wins and one draw, remaining unbeaten in the league, with Lazio separated only by additional tiebreakers. October has brought victories over Parma and Bologna, followed by a 1-0 Champions League win against Shakhtar Donetsk and a dramatic 2-1 league success over Fiorentina. The European game remained scoreless until Carlos Augusto struck in the 77th minute, after which Inter protected the lead despite Alessandro Bastoni's dismissal. Fiorentina caused even more trouble. Inter dominated territory but fell behind in the 65th minute and needed Marcus Thuram's stoppage-time equaliser before Piotr Zielinski converted a penalty to complete the comeback. The results remain excellent, but the last two matches have shown that Chivu's side can struggle to turn possession into early goals against compact defensive blocks.

Chivu continues to use Inter's familiar 3-5-2, with three centre-backs, aggressive wing-backs and a midfield designed to control both possession and counterpressing. Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are central to the buildup, while Dimarco and Carlos Augusto stretch opposing defensive lines and deliver from wide areas. Inter try to recover possession immediately after turnovers and keep opponents pinned inside their own half, but the system can leave space behind the wing-backs when the first pressure is broken. Against teams defending deep, another issue appears: the Nerazzurri sometimes circulate the ball for long stretches without finding enough space between the lines. Shakhtar and Fiorentina both forced them to remain patient. In Venice, Chivu will again expect territorial control, but the challenge will be to create high-quality chances without exposing the defence unnecessarily, especially given the crowded schedule and several forced changes.

Thuram is the main attacking reference in Lautaro's absence, combining pace, strength and intelligent movement between centre-backs. His late equaliser against Fiorentina once again demonstrated his importance in tight games. Francesco Pio Esposito provides aerial presence and hold-up play, while Ange-Yoan Bonny adds energy and pressing. Barella, Calhanoglu and Mkhitaryan remain the key midfield trio, with Zielinski and Petar Sucic available for rotation. Bastoni, Manuel Akanji and Yann Bisseck form the main defensive options, while Dimarco, Carlos Augusto, Andy Diouf and Djed Spence can cover the wide roles. In goal, Chivu can choose between Josep Martinez and Ivan Provedel, who made his league debut for Inter against Fiorentina. Lautaro Martinez remains out with a thigh muscle injury, Benjamin Pavard and Curtis Jones are also recovering from muscular problems, John Stones has not yet returned to full training, and Luis Henrique is sidelined with an adductor injury. Those absences reduce Chivu's flexibility, particularly in attack and defence.

Inter have won all five recent official meetings, keeping three clean sheets. Four of those five matches produced no more than three total goals, including consecutive 1-0 Serie A victories during the 2024/25 campaign.

The 5-1 Coppa Italia result in December 2025 is the obvious exception, but it is less useful as a guide to the current matchup. Venezia now operate under Nicola with a far more conservative defensive structure, and their last two home league meetings with Inter both stayed below three goals.

Nicola's Defensive Block Can Slow Inter's Wide Pressure

The biggest change under Nicola has been Venezia's spacing without the ball. Against Napoli, the midfield stayed close to the back line and repeatedly blocked central passing routes, forcing the visitors toward wide areas and lower-percentage deliveries. A similar structure appeared in Genoa, where Venezia again limited the number of clear chances despite eventually losing.

That setup is directly relevant against Inter. Dimarco and Carlos Augusto are major attacking outlets, so Hainaut and Haps will need to recover quickly and avoid being isolated. If Venezia can prevent the wing-backs from reaching the byline freely, Inter may be forced into longer spells of circulation around the outside of the block.

Lautaro's absence also matters. Thuram remains a major threat, but the chemistry with Esposito or Bonny is not yet as natural when Inter face a packed penalty area. That could increase the importance of midfield shots, set pieces and second balls rather than clean combinations through the centre.

The main danger is an early Inter goal. Venezia have scored only six times this season and are not built to chase games. If Nicola's side are forced to open up, the visitors' superior technical level could quickly turn a controlled match into a much more one-sided contest.

Inter's Quality Favors Control Rather Than Necessarily a Rout

Inter are clearly the stronger side and have scored 23 goals in eight league games, but their last two victories were far tighter than those numbers might suggest. Shakhtar held them scoreless until the 77th minute, while Fiorentina remained ahead until stoppage time.

That makes the schedule important. Chivu's team have played Champions League football and another demanding Serie A match within a short period, and rotation is possible with Lautaro, Pavard and several others unavailable. There is little reason for Inter to turn the game into an end-to-end contest if they gain control early.

Venezia's own attacking limitations also support a lower total. Nicola has improved the defensive organisation, but his team have scored only twice across their last three official matches and are unlikely to commit many players forward against the league leaders.

Recent head-to-head history points in the same direction. The spectacular 5-1 cup result aside, four of the last five meetings have finished with three goals or fewer. A controlled Inter win such as 2-0 or 3-0 fits the matchup better than an open shootout.

Match Prediction

Inter should dominate possession and create the greater number of chances, but the recent evidence suggests they may need patience against a deep defensive block. Venezia have changed significantly under Nicola, conceding only once across his first two matches while beating Napoli and narrowly losing at Genoa. Without Lautaro, and with a demanding schedule reducing Chivu's rotation options, the visitors may prefer to build pressure gradually rather than force a high-tempo game from the opening minutes.

The obvious risk is the gap in individual quality. Inter have scored 23 league goals, while Venezia have already conceded 17, so an early breakthrough could open the game considerably. Even so, Nicola's 5-3-2 should be designed specifically to deny central space, and the hosts offer very little attacking volume of their own. With four of the last five meetings staying at three total goals or fewer and Inter coming through a crowded week, under 3.5 goals looks like the more attractive angle.

Betting Pick: Under 3.5 Goals at 1.94.
