Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid. La Liga 2026/27, Matchday 9. October 17, 2026 | RCDE Stadium, Cornella de Llobregat | 14:00.

Atletico Madrid travel to Catalonia carrying one of the strongest runs in Spanish football. Diego Simeone's side have won five consecutive matches in all competitions, including the Madrid derby against Real and a 2-0 Champions League victory over Manchester United. Espanyol are moving in the opposite direction, having gone three league games without a win and gradually losing ground in the table.

RCDE Stadium still provides the hosts with an important source of confidence. Atletico have not won at this venue since 2021, while Espanyol beat them 2-1 here last season. The current balance of form is very different, however, and Simeone's team arrive with a deeper attack, stronger defensive numbers and more ways to control difficult game states.

Espanyol

Espanyol sit 12th in La Liga with eight points from eight matches and only one victory across their last five games. That success came away to Osasuna, while defeats against Rayo Vallecano and Elche were followed by a frustrating 1-1 draw with Malaga. Bryan Zaragoza opened the scoring in that match and Espanyol created enough first-half chances to build a larger advantage, but their intensity dropped after the interval and Adrian Nino equalised in the 93rd minute. That inability to maintain the same performance level for 90 minutes has become one of the biggest problems for Manolo Gonzalez.

Gonzalez generally uses a 4-2-3-1 built around compact defending and quick transitions. Espanyol prefer a medium block, try to close the central areas and then move the ball forward through the wings in only a few passes. Zaragoza is particularly important in those situations because of his acceleration and ability to beat defenders individually. The system can create dangerous counterattacks, but it becomes vulnerable when the holding midfielders fail to protect the back line. Espanyol have also developed a habit of dropping too deep after taking the lead, allowing opponents to recover territory and build sustained pressure around the penalty area.

Roberto Fernandez remains the main attacking reference after scoring six of Espanyol's 11 league goals. Edu Exposito provides creativity from midfield, while Pol Lozano is responsible for much of the defensive work in front of Leandro Cabrera and Omar El Hilali. Marco Dmitrovic and Angel Fortuno are the goalkeeping options, with Fortuno starting against Malaga. The injury situation reduces Gonzalez's attacking flexibility: Kike Garcia is still recovering from a hamstring problem, Jofre Carreras has been dealing with a groin issue, and Javi Hernandez was injured in the previous round. Javi Puado has returned to training after a serious knee injury, but his readiness for a full match remains uncertain.

  • Espanyol 1-3 Elche

  • Rayo Vallecano 2-1 Espanyol

  • Osasuna 0-2 Espanyol

Atletico Madrid

Atletico approach Matchday 9 in outstanding form. They are second in La Liga with 19 points from eight matches and have won five consecutive games in all competitions. The sequence includes league victories over Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Real Madrid and Alaves before the 2-0 Champions League success against Manchester United on October 13. Pablo Barrios scored in the opening minute of that match, Ademola Lookman added the second after the break, and Atletico once again showed how efficiently they can punish an opponent once the game begins to tilt in their favour. Across the five-game winning run, Simeone's side have scored 13 goals and conceded only two.

The familiar 4-4-2 remains the basic structure, but this Atletico are far more ambitious in possession than older versions of Simeone's team. They still defend compactly and counterattack quickly, yet they are also comfortable pressing higher, pushing the full-backs forward and using short combinations through midfield. Fast switches toward the wings remain an important weapon, as do late runs from deeper positions. Atletico have already scored 18 league goals in eight rounds, although the higher defensive line can still leave space behind the full-backs. The short recovery period after the Manchester United game is another factor Simeone will have to manage.

Julian Alvarez gives the attack intelligent movement between the lines, Jonathan David threatens the space behind defenders and Lookman offers another explosive one-on-one option. Barrios, Alex Baena and Johnny Cardoso provide a strong midfield blend, with Baena already scoring four league goals and Cardoso helping protect the balance behind the attacking players. Cristian Romero and David Hancko are important in defence, while Jan Oblak remains the reference point in goal. Alexander Sorloth has been recovering from a muscular problem, while Alejandro Grimaldo has already returned and played against Manchester United, giving Simeone another important option on the flank.

Recent results:

  • Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

  • Alaves 1-2 Atletico Madrid

  • Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

  • Atletico Madrid 4-0 Osasuna

  • Real Sociedad 0-3 Atletico Madrid

Home meetings with Atletico have traditionally been more comfortable for Espanyol than trips to Madrid. The Catalans are unbeaten in the last three listed games against Simeone's side at RCDE Stadium and won 2-1 here in August 2025. The previous two home meetings also ended level.

The latest overall matchup produced a very different picture. Atletico won 4-2 in February 2026, generated 18 shots and created significantly more dangerous situations. The current attacking numbers also favour the visitors, who have scored 18 league goals compared with Espanyol's 11.

Atletico Have More Ways to Decide the Game

One of the strongest arguments for Atletico is how widely their goals are distributed. Baena has four in the league, while Grimaldo and David have three each, and several other players are regularly involved in decisive attacking sequences. The visitors are no longer dependent on one striker or one specific route toward goal.

That creates a difficult defensive problem for Espanyol. If the hosts focus on Alvarez and David centrally, Atletico can generate danger through Baena, Lookman or the advancing full-backs. If Gonzalez protects the wide areas more aggressively, spaces can appear between the midfield and defence. Simeone also has enough quality on the bench to change the rhythm if his initial plan fails.

Espanyol are much more dependent on Fernandez. He has scored more than half of their league goals, and the attack becomes less threatening when opponents prevent regular service into the penalty area. Zaragoza can create independently, but the injuries around the attacking group reduce the number of alternative solutions available to Gonzalez.

RCDE Stadium History Meets Atletico's Current Momentum

Espanyol's strong recent home record in this fixture cannot be ignored. They have repeatedly made Atletico uncomfortable here, and the visitors have only a short recovery window after facing Manchester United in Europe. That could encourage Simeone to begin more cautiously and avoid turning the first half into a high-tempo contest.

The difference is that Atletico are now showing much greater control over multiple game states. They can dominate weaker opponents, defend compactly when required and increase the pressure late if the score remains level. Their five-game winning run includes several different match scripts, which suggests the current form is based on more than finishing variance.

Espanyol's tendency to lose intensity in the second half could become especially important. If the hosts survive the opening period but begin dropping deeper, Atletico possess enough attacking depth to increase the tempo without sacrificing structure.

Prediction

Espanyol's best chance is to keep the midfield compact, use Zaragoza in transition and try to frustrate Atletico during the opening stages. Their recent home history against Simeone's team shows that this venue can create a much more competitive game than the league table alone suggests.

The current form gap is still difficult to overlook. Espanyol have not won in three league matches and continue to struggle with defensive concentration, while Atletico have won five straight and conceded only twice during that run. The visitors also possess significantly more attacking alternatives if the first-choice combination fails to create enough chances.

Fatigue after the Champions League game adds some risk, but Simeone's squad depth should help manage that problem. Atletico's superior finishing, stronger defensive structure and greater ability to control the later stages make the away win the preferred selection.

Betting Pick: Atletico Madrid to Win at 1.78.
