Roma Return From a Six-Goal Thriller in Naples, While Cagliari Look to Recover After Back-to-Back Heavy Defeats
Six goals in Naples, a remarkable comeback and third place in Serie A underline how impressive Roma have been under Gian Piero Gasperini. The Giallorossi remain one of only two unbeaten teams in the league, although a demanding schedule and several injuries are beginning to complicate the coach's rotation plans.
Cagliari arrive in a very different mood. After winning four of their opening six league games, Fabio Pisacane's side have lost twice in a row by a combined 6-0 score. The Sardinians have already proved they can compete away from home by beating Atalanta and Udinese, however, and their main objective at the Olimpico will be to rediscover the defensive discipline that made them so difficult to break down earlier in the season.
Roma - form and statistics
Roma have made an excellent start and remain firmly among Serie A's leading teams. After eight rounds, Gasperini's side sit third with 18 points and a 19-6 goal difference, having recorded five wins and three draws without a single league defeat. Their strongest performances included 4-0 victories over Fiorentina and Lecce, plus clean-sheet wins against Torino and Genoa. The recent schedule has been more demanding. A 0-0 draw at Como was followed by a 2-0 win over Genoa and a convincing 4-0 Champions League victory against Slovan Bratislava. On October 24, Roma then produced one of the most entertaining games of the season in a 3-3 draw at Napoli. They trailed 2-0 early in the second half but responded through Matias Soule and substitute Leonardo Balerdi. After Scott McTominay restored Napoli's lead, Balerdi struck again from a Wesley delivery to rescue a point. It was Roma's first Serie A match this season in which they conceded three times, but the comeback reinforced the resilience of Gasperini's team.
Gasperini continues to use an aggressive 3-4-2-1 built around pressing, quick progression and constant involvement from the wing-backs. Roma try to stretch opponents horizontally, overload the half-spaces and move the ball into the penalty area before defensive blocks can settle. Their work immediately after losing possession is equally important, with players expected to press aggressively and prevent opponents from launching clean counterattacks. That intensity comes with risks. Once the first pressure is beaten, the three centre-backs can be forced to defend large spaces, while the high positioning of the wing-backs occasionally leaves clear transition lanes. Napoli exploited those areas several times. Gasperini's use of substitutions remains one of Roma's strengths, but the current run of Champions League and Serie A fixtures means he must manage workloads more carefully. Some rotation against Cagliari would therefore be unsurprising only three days after the exhausting trip to Naples.
Donyell Malen remains one of Roma's most dangerous attackers because of his pace, intelligent movement and ability to run behind defensive lines. Santiago Castro and Soule provide further threat, with Soule particularly effective when receiving between the lines and attacking defenders directly. Rodrigo Mora can also help connect midfield and attack through short combinations. Marten de Roon, Bryan Cristante and Niccolo Pisilli carry much of the midfield responsibility, with De Roon protecting the defensive structure, Cristante helping control the tempo and Pisilli offering forward runs from deeper positions. Nahuel Molina, Wesley and Emanuele Lulli provide width, while Gianluca Mancini, Evan Ndicka and Mario Hermoso remain central to the back line. Balerdi's two goals in Naples could earn him additional minutes. Pierluigi Gollini is currently the first-choice goalkeeper because Mile Svilar is recovering from a fractured toe. Manu Kone remains out with a muscular injury, Paulo Dybala is still unavailable because of a calf problem, and Lorenzo Pellegrini also missed the latest squad, leaving Gasperini with fewer options in midfield and attack.

Cagliari - team form and statistics
Cagliari began the season far better than many expected but have encountered their first significant setback in October. Pisacane's team sit eighth after eight matches with 13 points and a 6-9 goal difference, having recorded four wins, one draw and three defeats. Their away victories over Atalanta and Udinese were particularly impressive, as Cagliari defended compactly and converted a limited number of chances efficiently. A 1-1 draw against Juventus maintained their strong early position, but the international break was followed by a sharp decline. Monza beat Cagliari 4-0 in a match where the Sardinians failed to convert several first-half opportunities before losing control completely after the interval. Bologna then won 2-0 in Sardinia on October 24, with Nicolo Casale scoring from a corner and Federico Bernardeschi adding a penalty. Cagliari have therefore suffered consecutive defeats for the first time this season and have failed to score in either game.
Pisacane generally favours an organised approach based on compact spacing, midfield duels and quick transitions. Depending on the opponent, Cagliari can use either a 4-3-2-1 or 4-4-2, with both systems designed to reduce space around their own penalty area and create immediate forward options after recoveries. Against stronger teams, they are comfortable conceding territory and waiting for opportunities to counter, a strategy that worked well against Atalanta and Udinese. The recent problem has been balance. Monza punished turnovers in midfield, while against Bologna the buildup became too slow and predictable. Pisacane admitted afterwards that his team lacked vertical passing and runs behind the defensive line. Set pieces have also become a concern, with Cagliari occasionally losing their positioning on second balls. At the Olimpico, the visitors are likely to return to a more conservative structure and focus first on denying Roma space between the lines.
Pape Matar Mendy is one of Cagliari's main attacking outlets thanks to his work rate, movement and willingness to attack the box, although his finishing has been inconsistent. M'Bala Nzola and Kevin Carlos provide more physical alternatives, particularly when the team wants to play directly or attack crosses. Daniel Maldini can operate behind the striker and link midfield with the front line. Michel Adopo, Harry Winks and Alessandro Deiola are important centrally, with Adopo handling defensive work, Winks controlling possession and Deiola contributing in duels and set pieces. Roberto Gagliardini offers another physical option if Pisacane wants greater strength in midfield. Yerry Mina and Juan Rodriguez remain the main central defenders, supported by Ze Pedro and Adam Obert, while Elia Caprile continues in goal. Mattia Felici and Riyad Idrissi remain out with serious knee ligament injuries. Winks also suffered a heavy knock and back discomfort against Bologna, leaving his availability for Rome uncertain. Gagliardini is the most likely replacement if the English midfielder is unable to start.

Roma have won three of the last five meetings, with Cagliari taking one victory and the other ending level. Four of those games produced no more than two goals, and the Sardinians have failed to score on each of their last three visits to the Olimpico.
Cagliari have still shown they can frustrate Roma. Their 1-0 home victory in December 2025 was built on compact defending and effective counterattacks, while three of the previous five meetings were decided by no more than one goal. That record supports the possibility of another competitive game, although Roma's 4-0 victory in 2024 and the latest 2-0 home win show what can happen if Cagliari concede early and lose their defensive shape.
Why Cagliari Could Keep the Olimpico Contest Close
Roma deserve to be clear favourites, but the schedule gives the visitors a legitimate argument. Between October 20 and October 27, Gasperini's team will have played three competitive matches, including Champions League action and an emotionally draining trip to Napoli. Roma had to recover from two separate deficits in that 3-3 draw, and maintaining the same pressing intensity only three days later may be difficult.
The injury situation increases the rotation risk. Kone, Dybala, Pellegrini and Svilar are unavailable, limiting the number of trusted alternatives available to Gasperini. Roma still possess more individual quality, but changes in midfield and attack can affect the timing of their press and the speed of combinations around a compact defensive block.
Cagliari's early-season defensive record also deserves more attention than the last two results alone. Before the defeats to Monza and Bologna, Pisacane's side had conceded only three goals across six rounds while beating Atalanta and Udinese away and holding Juventus to a draw. That stretch showed they can protect the box effectively when their spacing is right.
The concern is obvious: six goals conceded and none scored over the last two matches represent a serious drop in confidence. Roma have also scored ten goals in four home league games and can punish any early mistake. Still, if Cagliari survive the opening pressure and force the hosts into a slower positional game, the visitors have a realistic chance of keeping the margin within one goal.
Roma's Schedule and Cagliari's Defensive Reset Shape the Handicap
Roma's strongest argument is their unbeaten league record and superior attacking quality. Malen, Soule and the supporting midfield runners can create chances through several different routes, while Gasperini's side have repeatedly shown an ability to change games from the bench. Their comeback in Naples was another reminder that even a poor start does not necessarily take them out of a match.
Cagliari's case rests less on attacking upside and more on game control. They are unlikely to trade chances with Roma, especially after failing to score in consecutive matches. Pisacane should prioritise compact distances, aerial protection around Mina and Rodriguez, and quick releases toward the forwards whenever Roma's wing-backs advance.
The visitors also have the advantage of not carrying European commitments. Both sides played on October 24, but Roma had already been involved in Champions League action earlier in the week, making their overall workload significantly heavier. If Gasperini rotates or the intensity drops after an hour, Cagliari could find the game increasingly manageable.
Backing the visitors still carries risk because their recent decline has been sharp and Roma have the quality to score multiple goals quickly. However, the +1.5 handicap gives Cagliari a reasonable margin. A narrow Roma victory would still cash the bet, while the visitors have already demonstrated away from home that they can frustrate stronger opponents.
Match Prediction
Roma are rightly favoured after an unbeaten start to Serie A and another impressive comeback in Naples, but this is a potentially awkward spot only three days after a demanding 3-3 draw and less than a week after Champions League action. Gasperini's injury list also reduces his flexibility, particularly in midfield, and some rotation appears likely. If Cagliari can remain compact through the opening phase, Roma may have to work patiently rather than overwhelming the visitors immediately.
The main danger is Cagliari's sudden loss of form, with six goals conceded and none scored across two straight defeats. Even so, Pisacane's team conceded only three times over the opening six rounds and have already won difficult away games against Atalanta and Udinese. Their attacking limitations make an outright upset difficult to support, but the positive handicap offers more protection. With Roma potentially affected by fatigue and personnel changes, Cagliari +1.5 looks attractive at the current price.
Betting Pick: Cagliari +1.5 Asian Handicap at 1.81.
