Sassuolo Have Already Troubled Serie A's Heavyweights, but Now Face Gattuso's Unbeaten League Leaders

Three straight wins, a dominant 3-0 victory over Juventus in Turin and first place in Serie A have made Lazio one of the biggest stories of the early season. Gennaro Gattuso's side remain unbeaten through eight rounds and have conceded only five goals, combining an increasingly disciplined defensive structure with enough pace and quality to punish teams in transition.

Sassuolo are moving in the opposite direction. Alberto Aquilani's team have gone four league matches without a win and conceded six goals across recent defeats to Frosinone and Como. Still, the Neroverdi have already beaten Juventus and held Milan at home, proving that stronger opponents cannot simply expect an easy night at the Mapei. The question is whether Sassuolo can rediscover that level against the most consistent team in the division.

Sassuolo - statistics, form of players

Sassuolo started the campaign reasonably well but have lost momentum over the past month. After eight rounds, Aquilani's side sit 14th with eight points and a 12-16 goal difference, recording two wins, two draws and four defeats. Their 3-2 home victory over Juventus was the early highlight, with Sassuolo attacking efficiently and using the wide areas particularly well. They have failed to build on that performance. A 2-1 loss to Monza was followed by a 1-1 draw with Milan before consecutive defeats against Frosinone and Como. The 4-2 loss at Frosinone exposed major defensive problems despite goals from Domenico Berardi and Kristian Thorstvedt, while the latest 2-0 defeat at Como showed another weakness. Sassuolo competed well before half-time but lost intensity after conceding, allowing Anastasios Douvikas to score twice. Only one point from the last four rounds has pushed Aquilani's team steadily toward the lower part of the table.

Aquilani wants Sassuolo to play through a possession-oriented 4-3-3 built around short passing, central combinations and patient buildup from defence. Nemanja Matic is especially important because he offers a secure first passing option and can find teammates between the lines. Once the ball reaches the attacking third, Berardi and Armand Lauriente are encouraged to isolate defenders and create through individual quality. The problem is that Sassuolo's insistence on playing through pressure can become dangerous when the structure is not precise. Several losses in poor areas contributed to the defeat against Frosinone, while Como gradually took control of midfield after the break. The full-backs also advance aggressively, leaving space behind them when the midfield fails to cover quickly enough. Against Lazio, those weaknesses are particularly concerning because Gattuso's team are very comfortable turning central recoveries into immediate forward attacks.

Berardi remains the key attacking player thanks to his technical quality, shooting and ability to move inside from the right, while Sebastiano Esposito and Kieran Bowie provide movement around the central areas. Lauriente offers pace and one-on-one threat from the left, with Cristian Volpato available to increase creativity later in games. Matic, Vasilije Adzic and Darryl Bakola carry much of the midfield responsibility, while Thorstvedt adds physical strength and late runs into the box. Duje Caleta-Car and Steve Kanda are the main central defenders, with Ignace Van der Brempt and Jose Angel Escriche Obrador operating outside them. Stefano Turati started in goal against Como and made several important saves before the break. Aquilani's options remain limited by injuries, with Jay Idzes recovering from a quadriceps problem, Fedde Leysen out long term after an ACL tear, Daniel Boloca still dealing with a knee injury and Ismael Kone unavailable following a serious leg fracture.

Lazio - team players' uniforms, statistics

Lazio have been the standout team of the opening Serie A months and lead the table with 22 points from eight rounds. Gattuso's side have seven wins and one draw with a 16-5 goal difference, and their only dropped points came in a 2-2 home draw with Milan. Since then, the Biancocelesti have won four consecutive league games and looked increasingly secure defensively. Wins over Venezia and Monza were followed by an outstanding 3-0 victory away to Juventus, where Oliver Provstgaard, Gustav Isaksen and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru all scored. Lazio then beat Parma 2-1 at home in a more difficult contest. Christos Mandas had to make several saves in the first half before Kenneth Taylor opened the scoring and a Diego Carlos own goal doubled the advantage. Parma responded only in stoppage time, allowing Lazio to remain unbeaten and strengthen their position at the top.

Gattuso has built a well-organised 4-3-3 around high pressing, aggressive midfield duels and quick transitions. Lazio do not insist on monopolising possession. When necessary, they are comfortable dropping into a compact middle block, denying central passing lanes and waiting for opportunities to attack immediately after recoveries. The midfield is crucial to that balance, with players expected to support attacks while also protecting the full-backs whenever possession is lost. That structure worked particularly well against Juventus, who struggled to create clear positional attacks. There are still moments when Lazio relax too much after gaining a lead, as seen against Monza and during parts of the Parma game, but the overall defensive control has been excellent. Against Sassuolo, the visitors are likely to press selectively and focus on forcing errors from Aquilani's short buildup rather than chasing the ball recklessly.

Isaksen, Tijjani Noslin and Mattia Zaccagni provide the main attacking threat. Isaksen is in particularly good form, having scored against both Monza and Juventus, while also hitting the bar and having a goal disallowed against Parma. Noslin offers constant movement and can play across the front line, while Zaccagni adds creativity and intelligent combination play. Andrea Pinamonti provides a more physical option inside the box. Davide Frattesi, Reda Belahyane and Taylor form an energetic midfield group, with Frattesi making late attacking runs, Belahyane protecting the centre and Taylor contributing both movement and shooting from deeper areas. Danilo Cataldi and Dele-Bashiru give Gattuso useful alternatives. Josip Sutalo and Provstgaard remain central to the back line, supported by Nuno Tavares and Romano Floriani Mussolini, with Mandas in goal. Adam Marusic and Nicolo Rovella are still recovering from injuries and are unlikely to return in time, while Albert Gudmundsson remains unavailable because of a shoulder problem. Matteo Cancellieri is back in the squad, giving Gattuso another rotation option.

Lazio have won three of the last five meetings, while Sassuolo have taken one victory and another match finished level. In each of Lazio's three wins, the Roman side conceded no more than once, reflecting how effectively they have usually controlled this matchup.

The warning for the visitors comes from the most recent game in Reggio Emilia. Sassuolo won 1-0 in September 2025 after punishing Lazio's mistakes and defending the lead successfully. The current circumstances are very different, however, with Lazio leading Serie A and Sassuolo entering after four winless rounds.

Gattuso's Press Can Target Sassuolo's Risky Buildup

One of Lazio's biggest advantages should be their ability to pressure Sassuolo in central areas. Gattuso asks Frattesi, Taylor and the other midfielders to react aggressively to loose passes and immediately turn recoveries into forward attacks. Against Juventus, that approach repeatedly disrupted the opponent's buildup and helped Lazio create high-value situations without requiring long possessions.

Sassuolo are particularly vulnerable to that type of pressure because Aquilani prefers to build through short passes from deep positions. When the timing or spacing is wrong, the Neroverdi can lose the ball with too many players ahead of it. Frosinone punished those mistakes repeatedly, while Como took over the centre of the pitch after the break.

The wide matchups also favour Lazio. Isaksen is in excellent form and can attack the space behind aggressive full-backs, while Zaccagni can move inside and combine around the edge of the box. If Sassuolo's wide defenders push too high, the visitors should have opportunities to isolate the centre-backs in transition.

Matic's influence will therefore be crucial for the hosts. If he can slow the tempo, secure the first phase and prevent Lazio from winning the ball in dangerous areas, Sassuolo have enough technical quality through Berardi and Lauriente to cause problems of their own.

Sassuolo's Home Results Are the Main Warning for Lazio

The strongest argument against backing Lazio too aggressively is Sassuolo's home record against stronger opponents. Aquilani's side have already beaten Juventus 3-2 and held Milan to a 1-1 draw, showing that they can raise their level significantly when given space to attack.

Berardi remains capable of deciding individual moments, while Lauriente can be dangerous if Lazio's full-backs advance too aggressively. Gattuso's side have defended extremely well overall, but Parma still created several dangerous chances before the break in the most recent league game.

The difference is consistency. Sassuolo have taken only one point from their last four matches and conceded six goals in the previous two, while Lazio have won four league games in a row and allowed only five goals all season. The visitors have shown far greater ability to recover from poor periods without losing their overall structure.

That makes the zero handicap particularly attractive. Lazio do not need to dominate from the opening whistle, and a draw simply returns the stake. Given their defensive stability, superior form and ability to attack Sassuolo's weaknesses in transition, the visitors have the stronger overall setup.

Match Prediction

Lazio arrive as the league leaders for good reason. Seven wins from eight games, only five goals conceded and a 3-0 victory away to Juventus demonstrate a level of organisation that Sassuolo have struggled to match. Gattuso's midfield pressure should be especially effective against a team that insists on playing short from the back despite recent mistakes, while Isaksen and Zaccagni have the pace and movement to attack the spaces left behind Sassuolo's advancing full-backs.

The main risk is Sassuolo's ability to produce much stronger home performances against elite opponents. They have already beaten Juventus and taken a point from Milan, while Berardi can still change a match with one moment of quality. Even so, the Neroverdi are winless in four, have conceded six goals across their last two defeats and continue to deal with injuries in central areas. Lazio are far more stable and do not need an outright away win for this selection to succeed, making the zero Asian handicap the preferred option.

Betting Pick: Lazio 0 Asian Handicap at 1.62.
